Drawings
Pencil is my first love. My mother told me that I asked to sit in my highchair at the kitchen table with pencil and paper while my father (a school teacher) graded papers and reviewed drawings (he taught drafting). Throughout my childhood, I always had pencils and a sketchpad and made countless drawings.
The quiet moments of observation when drawing from life are so meaningful. Often, my drawings inform future paintings allowing me to explore ideas and compositions.
There's a humble honesty to a drawing as the artist translates inspiration into line and tone. The simplest of tools - a pencil and paper - can convey so much and evoke such strong emotion.
