The Shannon Farm
Jack Shannon came to the Ulrich Farm as a young 11-year old boy whose only wish was to be a farmer. His family was from center city Philadelphia - a large Irish family with no connections to country living, let alone, farming. Jack persisted and his parents searched for a farmer to take their son on to the farm. They met Mrs. Ulrich, Sr. through Laura who had just arrived on the farm as a new bride. For years, Jacks parents drove him up to Bedminster to work summers on the Ulrich Farm. He eventually learned the trade and went on to lease farmland down in lower Bucks County where he and his wife ran a large farm stand. They finally were able to realize their own dream of having a farm of their own and live just down the road from the Ulrich Farm.
Jack still farms the land on the Ulrich Farm - soybeans and field corn. I love his stories and his steady upbeat attitude. If you want to know what's going on in the community, ask Jack. His warm congenial manner makes him a friend to many. But you'll be hard pressed to catch him sitting, unless it's on a tractor. Farming is hard work with long days and endless challenges. Jack will tell you that.
